Should I Change My Facial Cleansing Routine In The Summer

By Eliana

With summer right around the corner, the threat of breakouts, other sensitivities, and blemishes increases. This is in large part due to the harsher sun conditions, humidity, sweat, and debris that can stick to your face during this season. While cleansing is important all year round, in the summer particularly, it becomes the most important step for keeping your face and skin healthy.

Should I switch my cleanser for summer?

For the summer, you will want to switch to a light and gentle gel-format cleanser, which is meant to help remove dirt and excess oil by deeply cleansing the skin. What makes gel formats better for this season is that the formulas don’t tend to strip the skin of its natural moisture, making it less likely that you will suffer from dryness and pulling even during the summer.

Generally, the most important thing is that you use a water-based solution for the summer, as these can be gentler and more suitable for the weather conditions. Aloe vera and hyaluronic acid tend to be the most suitable solutions for the summer as they can be lightweight and do not tend to leave a greasy residue on the skin. More importantly, water-based ingredients tend to be more hydrating for the skin, and that hydration is something you want for summer.

Should my cleansing routine change for the warmer months?

Cleansing daily is important regardless of the weather conditions. However, particularly in the summer when the higher heat levels and humidity can cause you to sweat, and you are wearing sunscreen, your routine will naturally need to change a bit.

SPF products, while completely necessary for the health of your skin, can clog your pores if they are left on and not removed at the end of the day. Your skin should be washed every morning and every night, and during your night cleansing cycle, you might want to double cleanse in order to remove all the product and sweat buildup from the day.

You want to avoid cleansing more than twice a day, though, as ultimately that could strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving your skin irritated and damaged.

Can I use an oil-based cleanser in the summer?

An oil-based cleanser can be an excellent solution even in the summer for your first cleansing of the night. This is because these types of cleansers can better remove sunscreen and makeup, leaving your skin cleaner. However, this should then be followed by a water-based cleanser, which can truly help to deep-clean the skin and remove all impurities.

Final Thoughts:

While it can be intimidating to change up your skincare routine with the change of seasons, oftentimes it is necessary to do so. This is because your skin is facing different weather conditions that need to be addressed through your skin care routine. However, if you have found products that work for you, nothing is blocking you from integrating those into your new summer skin care routine for better results faster.
