What To Do In Athens

By Eliana

Spending your days in Athens is never dull, especially if you have an expert travel guide to help you pass your time there. While things in the city are hard to miss, such as the Acropolis, this guide will help you know what to explore outside those central monuments.

1. Go to the theater

Athens is a cultural hub with 152 theatre stages and halls. This means that no matter who you are and what you are interested you will find a production that interests you. From watching a play on a small stage to watching Yo-Yo Ma play in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in the summer, the options are truly endless.

2. Wine tasting and tour

For a more unique wine tasting experience we recommend visiting Pyrgos Vasilissis. This grand estate is now privately owned and functions as a small vineyard. However, its original owner was the first queen of Greece, Queen Amalia, who was known for her love of nature. The tour manages to be the perfect blend of a Vineyard tour, a brief history of the emergence of the Greek nation, and a wine tasting, all in one.

The tour is offered in both Greek and English.

3. Roof Top Bar & Restaurant

Enjoy the incredible view of the Acropolis at night by having a drink or meal in one of the rooftop gardens around central Athens. Make sure to make your reservation a few days in advance as most restaurants and bars in the area tend to be quite busy on the day.

4. Sunset at Sounio

No trip to Athens can be complete without visiting Sounio for the sunset. The temple of Poseidon is open to the public until sundown on most days, but even after you leave the temple it is worth staying in the area and enjoying a coffee or drink in one of the local bars and restaurants to enjoy the view of the sun setting behind the temple.

5. Spend a day in Ancient Greece

The best part of central Athens is the incredible amount of monuments that are still standing. Take a day to walk around the Parthenon and Acropolis. Visit the Agora and Hadrian’s library, and walk around the same area that the very people who came up with the concept of Democracy did.

Many of the artifacts are now being housed in the Museum of Acropolis so make sure to drop in and see both their temporary exhibitions and their regular ones.

Final Thoughts…

There can never be too many days spent in Athens, as it is a city where you can always find new things to do. From visiting vineyards to enjoying incredible culture and food, there is something to satisfy every traveler’s dreams.
