In the past few decades, there has never been a time when jeans were not one of the most popular clothing types for people of all ages and genders. The versatility and durability of this fabric has allowed jeans to become a comfortable staple. While, for years, blue jeans were in fashion, denim can now come in all sorts of colors and styles.
With so many different styles and fashions constantly changing, it can sometimes feel like a Herculean task to keep up with all the options. This is why we have created this all-inclusive guide to help you learn more about the different types of jeans.
How are the types of Jeans differentiated?
When it comes to jeans, you will often see in the product descriptions key terms that refer to the cut, the wash, and the waist of the jeans. It is these four categories of differentiation that we normally use when referring to jeans. Between these four, you can find numerous different styles.
1.The Cut
When referring to the cut, we are speaking about the way that different jeans fit on your body, and specifically, how the legs of the jeans are shaped. In this category, we will find many different types of jeans, including.
Bootcut: Bootcut jeans take their name from their form as they are designed to fit over boots. As such, the silhouette is balanced, with the bottom part of the jeans having just enough space for a boot to fit under it.
Skinny: Skinny jeans are tight-fitting from the waist to the ankle. These types of jeans are meant to wrap and shape your body. Due to this, they often have more elastane and flexibility.
Straight: Straight cut jeans have a consistent width from hip to hem. This is one of those classic and timeless fits that never truly go out of fashion.
Flared: Flared jeans are the staple of the ‘70s, but to this day, there are many who prefer this dramatic silhouette with the fitted top and loose bottom that widens from the knee down.
Narrow: The perfect mix between skinny and straight jeans, narrow jeans have a slimmer cut without being as restricting.
Capri: Capri jeans tend to be a summer staple as the jeans are cropped at the knee to provide a great casual style for summer.
Wide-leg: Loose from the hip down, the wide-leg jeans are extremely comfortable as they allow a lot of space for movement.
Baggy: Baggy jeans are completely oversized and are often kept in place with the use of a belt. This style is happy to see a reemergence with the popularity of ‘90s and Y2K styles.
Distressed
Mom: A high-waisted, relaxed fit that is looser around the hips and more tapered near the ankles. This is a go-to style for many as it is extremely flattering.
2.The Wash
The wash in jeans refers to the color of the jeans, from stone washed, medium, bleached, stone all the way to light, there are a myriad different washes, all of which affect the hue and color of your jeans.
3.The Waist
Finally, the waist refers to the way that your jeans will fit on your body. The most common types are Low-rise, Mid-rise, and High-Rise. These three are references to where the waist will sit on your body. With a low-rise, th

e jeans will be closing right on your hip bone, while with a high-rise, they will usually be above your belly button.
Final Thoughts:
Understanding the terminology of the different jean types can help you distinguish between timeless styles and trendy ones, while allowing you to shop for exactly the pair of jeans you want. The most important thing is not to be intimidated by all the variations, and instead, try to find the style of jeans that suits your needs and body type.
